Flash reflections for bokeh

If your a fan of bokeh effects like me then your going to want to learn how to use your flash to make your own bokeh. In this shoot I was inspired to use the keyboard my girlfriend gave me (thanks dear!) to create a bokeh effect. Since the piano keys are naturally glossy and reflective I know I can use it to create some bokeh through my flash.

This is a very simple set up using two speedlites and some light modifiers. Strobist info: 1/125 at f/1.8 with iso 100. 1/128th power Flash with snoot at upper right of subject and a 1/64th power flash with grid spot on the upper far end of  the subject. You can see the setup photo below.

The important key in making this shot is to make sure you are able to use the largest aperture your lens can make. In my case I used the 50mm f/1.8 of canon so I am able to create  those bokeh effects very easily. Since opening up your aperture will increase your exposure I recommend that you use your camera’s highest sync speed with your flash and set your flash at its lowest power.
